Are your window sashes mounted with
closed shoes or
open shoes?
| Double hung windows have pivot bars on the sash which fit into shoes in the frame. Some windows have closed shoes, and some have open shoes. |

Closed shoe |

Open shoe |
For windows with open shoes:

Use screwdriver to make sure shoe openings are pointed up. |

Set pivot bars into shoes. |

Gently rock sash several times to make sure pivot bars are seated securely into shoes, then tilt sash to upright and close. |
For windows with closed shoes:

Use screwdriver to pull shoes down, turning C-shaped openings to vertical, facing you. |

Set one shoe opening slightly lower than the other. |

Insert pivot bar into one shoe, then bring sash to level while inserting pivot bar into other shoe; tilt sash to upright and close. |
